Jim Peterson is an American landscape and astrophotographer whose images reveal the quiet poetry of light, land, and sky across the heartland and beyond. Based in Indiana, Jim brings to his work more than three decades of experience as a theatre and film educator — a background that deeply informs his approach to composition, storytelling, and the emotional language of light.
After 32 years of teaching the art of narrative, Jim turned his creative focus outward, exchanging the stage for the night sky and the classroom for the open landscape. What began as a personal exploration soon evolved into a professional pursuit, combining his cinematic eye with a fascination for the natural world and its celestial rhythms.
As a licensed UAV Part 107 pilot, Jim also integrates aerial perspectives into his landscape work, using drones not only as technical instruments but as creative partners — extending his vision to vantage points once impossible. Whether capturing the curve of a river valley at dawn or the arc of the Milky Way above a quiet field, his photographs reveal both the grandeur and intimacy of the world we inhabit.
Jim’s work bridges art and science, precision and wonder — a natural continuation of a life spent teaching others to see, feel, and tell stories through images. Through his photography, he invites viewers to slow down, look deeper, and rediscover the beauty that surrounds us every day, both under the sun and among the stars.
